The university is pleased to provide the announcement and guidelines for the King-Chavez-Parks InitiativeóFuture Faculty Fellowship Program.

Purpose

The King-Chavez-Parks Future Faculty Fellowship Program is funded by the State of Michigan and is intended to increase the pool of traditionally underrepresented candidates pursuing faculty teaching careers in postsecondary education. Preference may not be given to applicants on the basis of race, color, ethnicity, gender, or national origin. Applications are encouraged from minorities, women, people with disabilities, and individuals from cultural, linguistic, geographic, and socio-economic backgrounds who would otherwise not adequately be represented in the graduate student and faculty populations.

Amount of Award

The amount of the KCP Future Faculty Fellowship Award will depend on the studentís financial needs. The maximum available award for masterís students is $20,000 and for doctoral students is $35,000. These amounts may be distributed over a two and one half year period for Masters Fellows and over a four to six year period for Doctoral Fellows.

Eligibility

To be eligible, an applicant must:

∑  be admitted to study in a masterís or doctoral program at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

∑ be in good academic standing if already enrolled

∑ not currently be a recipient of a KCP Initiative Fellowship Award from another institution.

∑ have not received another KCP Fellowship award for the same degree level (masterís or doctorate).

∑ not currently be in default status on any guaranteed student loan and/or a KCP Loan.

∑ be a citizen of the United States.

∑ be a resident of the State of Michigan who meets the University of Michigan-Dearbornís requirements for residency.

∑ be planning and able to teach or secure an administrative position in postsecondary education.

∑ Transcripts of your last degree program

∑ A description of your proposed study

∑ Three letters of recommendation

 Deadline

Applications must be submitted by June 30 for fall enrollment and October 31 for winter enrollment. Review of and decisions regarding applications will occur in July for fall enrollment and November for winter enrollment. Applications will be scheduled for review by the Faculty Fellowship Review Committee. Awards will continue to be made until all program funds are committed or expended.

Selection Criteria

Applications will be reviewed by a committee of faculty members appointed by the Dearborn Graduate Board. Preference will be given to applicants who meet the following selection criteria:

∑ Outstanding academic credentials and recommendations

∑ Statement of purpose indicates a well thought out plan to teach or secure an administrative position in a postsecondary position after completion of degree

∑ Educational and career goal statement links the applicantís interest, academic preparation, and current studies to his or her future plans

Conditions of the Award

Masterís KCP Future Faculty Fellows agree to pursue and obtain a masterís degree within four (4) years of receiving this fellowship award. Fellows must either pursue a doctoral degree at a post-secondary educational institution within one (1) year after attaining their masterís degree or begin a teaching or administrative career in a 2 or 4 year post-secondary institution and continue this employment for a minimum of three (3) years.

Doctoral KCP Future Faculty Fellows agree to pursue and obtain a doctoral degree within eight (8) years of beginning doctoral study. Fellows must begin a teaching or administrative career at a post-secondary educational institution within one (1) year after attaining their doctoral degree, and remain in employment at a post-secondary institution for a period of not less than three (3) years.

The KCP Initiative Ė Future Faculty Fellowship shall revert to a loan subject to repayment to the State of Michigan if:

  • good academic standing is not maintained.
  • the degree is not attained within the time frame specified above after the beginning of the award period.
  • the fellow does not pursue an academic or administrative career as stated under "Conditions" above.
  • the fellow does not remain in an academic or administrative career for a three year period (amount may be prorated according to the time actually served in an academic environment).
