Mentoring programs to get a boost at Oct. 25 program

DEARBORN---Programs to support adults mentoring children will get a lift at a program to be held at the University of Michigan-Dearborn on Sat., Oct. 25, the nationally recognized Make a Difference Day. Featured speaker will be Daniel Granholm Mulhern, chair of the Michigan Community Service Commission.

The "2003 Children's Summit: Mentoring - Let's Pass It On!" is a partnership of Child's Hope, the child abuse prevention council for Western and Downriver Wayne County; the UM-Dearborn School of Education;: the Office of the Governor; Wayne Regional Educational Service Agency; United Way Community Services; the Michigan Department of Education; Mentor Michigan; the Children's Trust Fund; and the Michigan Community Service Commission.

The Western Wayne County Children's Summit is a kickoff to six similar events being held throughout the state to craft an agenda and action plan for the state-wide mentoring program called "Mentor Michigan," organized by the Michigan Community Service Commission.

"The 2003 Children's Summit brings the community together to share thoughts on mentoring our children," according to Judy Hoeffler, executive director of Child's Hope. "It is a forum of ideas and planning. And, most of all, it is a call to action, to connect the needs of children with the gifts of adult mentorship. Results will include an action plan to help children in Wayne county and to gather input from Wayne county citizens to shape the Mentor Michigan program."

The Summit includes a welcome and vision by Mulhern, who, with his wife, Gov. Jennifer Granholm, has served as a mentor. Also included are workshops on getting programs started, teachers as mentors, retirees as mentors, and models for pre-school, elementary, middle and high schools. Facilitated assessment sessions dealing with mentoring issues will allow participants to express needs and allow Mulhern to conclude the Summit by framing mentoring needs for children at risk.

The Summit, scheduled from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 25 in the UM-Dearborn School of Management Building, is free, but registration is limited. Call Child's Hope at (313) 583-6401 to register.
