Documentary shows 'The Power of Good' on Nov. 15

DEARBORN---The University of Michigan-Dearborn's Voice/Vision Holocaust Survivor Oral History Archive, in conjunction with the Charles and Rita Gelman Educational Foundation, will present a public screening of the film "Nicholas Winton: The Power of Good" at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15 in Room 1500 of the campus's Social Sciences Building.

The film, which is free and open to the public, will be followed by a panel discussion at 7:30 p.m. Two local child survivors of the Holocaust, Rene Lichtman and Fred Lessing, will participate as part of the panel, along with Sidney Bolkosky, the William E. Stirton Professor in Social Sciences at UM-Dearborn, and Jamie Wraight, curator and historian of the Voice/Vision Holocaust Survivor Oral History Archive.

Directed by Matej Minac and narrated by CBC journalist Joe Schlesinger, "The Power of Good" is a 64-minute documentary that explores the story of Nicholas Winton, an Englishman who saved the lives of 669 Jewish children in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia. Between March 1939 and August 1939, Winton organized eight transports (one airplane and seven trains) to take children from Prague to new homes in Great Britain, and kept quiet about it until his wife discovered a scrapbook documenting his mission in 1988, according to the National Center for Jewish Film Web site.

The film won an Emmy Award for Best International Documentary in 2002, as well as the Trilobit Prize from the Czech Republic and the Slovak Film Critic's Prize IGRIC.
