Taxation track added for master's degree

DEARBORN---The University of Michigan-Dearborn's School of Management has developed a new area of study in taxation for students pursuing a master of science in accounting degree.

The new taxation track, which will begin this fall, fulfills the new 150-credit-hour requirement for certified public accountants set by the Michigan State Board of Accountancy.

"The taxation focus was developed in response to a huge amount of industry input from both corporations and accounting firms," according to Michael Harkness, assistant professor of accounting at UM-Dearborn.

"Most traditional taxation programs focus on tax compliance, but our program puts emphasis on communication skills and tax planning," Harkness said. "This is more attractive to accounting firms and corporations because it's more in line with overall business strategy. It teaches those in accounting positions how to work to do business and limit taxes."

The new taxation track includes a course on succession planning and issues confronting businesses in terms of taxation at the state and local levels.

For more information on the program, call the School of Management's Department of Accounting and Finance at 593-5230.
