High school juniors and seniors to experience engineering opportunities

DEARBORN---Local high school juniors and seniors will get to explore opportunities in the fields of engineering and computer science from 8:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 18 at the College of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

The students will be drawn from a variety of regional high schools who registered for the program earlier this spring.

The highlight of the day will be the competition for scholarships and cash prizes in either an engineering or computer science competition. In addition, participants will meet current UM-Dearborn engineering students, view projects such as award-winning Mini-Baja cars and robots, tour the college and learn about its engineering programs.

"Engineering enrollment is suffering in all areas of the United States. The popular opinion is that all engineering jobs are being sent to the old Third World countries when in fact this is simply not true," according to John Cole, president of Cole Engineering and chair of UM-Dearborn's engineering alumni affiliate. "What is true is that the mundane and menial engineering jobs are being outsourced to China and India, but the high-value engineering jobs are remaining in the hands of United States-born and educated engineers. Our intent with this engineering experience day is to highlight that the professions of engineering and computer science are alive and well in the United States. The only suffering they are experiencing is a lack of students entering into these fields."
