Engineering honor society brings in high-schoolers

DEARBORN---Upsilon Pi Epsilon, UM-Dearborn's computer science honor society, will host its third Engineering Institute for high school students from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 15 on campus.

The event is an all-day hands-on technology seminar geared toward high school students gaining experience in computer science and computer engineering.

"This is a great opportunity for students to meet and work with UM-Dearborn students, meet other college-bound students, acquire new skills, and check out the resources of the College of Engineering and Computer Science," according to Adam Rose, Upsilon Pi Epsilon president.

The workshop includes sessions on computer programming, web development, and database design. Seminars will be taught by UM-Dearborn students in the College of Engineering and Computer Science and members of Upsilon Pi Epsilon.

Seminar speakers will include Bruce Maxim, professor of computer and information science; Reinaldo Perez, director of academic services for the College of Engineering and Computer Science; and UM-Dearborn students.

"High school students who attend not only learn hands-on, practical knowledge of computer technologies but they also learn what life is like as an engineering or computer science college student," Rose said.

The event is sponsored by Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the College of Engineering and Computer Science, and the Office of Admissions & Orientation.

The fee to attend the institute is $10 and includes breakfast and lunch. To register or for more information, contact Urana Gray at 593-3576 or at urana@umd.umich.edu.
