Claude J. Summers named professor emeritus
DEARBORN---Claude J. Summers, who has taught at the University of Michigan-Dearborn
since 1970, has been named professor emeritus of English language and
literature.
The U-M Regents approved the appointment for Summers at their March meeting. Summers retired from active duty at the end of last year.

In addition to his popular courses on Shakespeare and other topics, Summers has published extensively in both Renaissance and modern English literature. His publications include monographs on modern English authors E.M. Forster and Christopher Isherwood. Summers also was co-author on a study of poet Ben Jonson, and he co-edited 12 volumes of essays from biennial conferences on the English Renaissance held at UM-Dearborn from the 1970s to the 1990s.
"He is also a widely recognized pioneer in gay studies," the Regents noted. "In addition to publishing numerous essays and articles in the field, he authored 'Gay Fictions: Wilde to Stonewall: Studies in a Male Homosexual Literary Tradition' and edited 'The Gay and Lesbian Literary Heritage,' a major reference work which received several awards and citations."
Summers received his bachelor's degree from Louisiana State University in 1966, and his master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Chicago in 1967 and 1970. While at Chicago, Summers received a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, a Danforth Foundation Teaching Fellowship, and a Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship.
He joined the UM-Dearborn faculty in 1970 and was promoted to associate professor in 1973 and professor in 1977. In 1986, Summers received the campus's Distinguished Faculty Research Award, and was William E. Stirton Professor in Humanities from 1989 to 1994. He received the UM-Dearborn Distinguished Teaching Award in 1995.
Summers lives in Dearborn.
