Ford executive and community leader to be commencement speakers

DEARBORN---Timothy J. O'Brien, vice president of corporate relations for Ford Motor Company, and Shirley R. Stancato, president and CEO of New Detroit, will give be the main speakers at the Winter commencement ceremonies on Sunday, April 27.

O'Brien will speak at a morning ceremony for graduates of the College of Engineering and Computer Science and the School of Management, and Stancato will speak at an afternoon ceremony for graduates of CASL and School of Education.

O'Brien oversees strategic development and integration of global, national and community renewal and outreach initiatives at Ford. He assures that the company's relationships, particularly in the areas of environment and community renewal, are aligned with the business strategy and objectives of the company.

Named to the position in December 2002, O'Brien is responsible for leading the redevelopment of the Ford Rouge Center in Dearborn and for identifying emerging corporate relationship issues, such as privacy and appropriate company strategy.

O'Brien earned a bachelor's degree in political science at UM-Dearborn in 1976 and a law degree from the Detroit College of Law. He is the author of Clean Air Law and Regulation, Title II Motor Vehicle Provisions and Ford & ISO 14001.

He is a member of UM-Dearborn's Citizens Advisory Committee and the Environmental Interpretive Center's advisory board.

Stancato is the first woman to be elected president and CEO of New Detroit, a coalition of area leaders working to ensure economic and social equity.

Prior to her tenure with New Detroit, Stancato spent more than 30 years with Bank One, formerly known as NBD Bank. She began her banking career as a college student and rose through the ranks to the position of senior vice president.

She earned a bachelor's degree in sociology and a master's degree in industrial relations at Wayne State University.

Stancato is a member of UM-Dearborn's Citizens Advisory Committee and serves on the boards of Detroit Zoological Society, Coleman A. Young Foundation, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Schools of the 21st Century, City Connect Detroit and the Detroit Black Chamber of Commerce.
