UM-Dearborn honors Taylor resident for outstanding academic achievement

DEARBORN---Taylor resident Wendy Nicole Wiesend received the Chancellor's Medallion for outstanding academic achievement at the University of Michigan-Dearborn's May commencement exercises. The University presents the award to five graduates at each commencement.

Graduating with high distinction, Wiesend earned dual degrees: a bachelor of science in biology and a bachelor of arts in psychology. Her academic awards include the James B. Angell Scholar Award, the 2002 Honors Scholar in biology, the Saunders Award, and class honors.

Wiesend participated in sophisticated biology research projects developing plants that clean contaminated soils. She metal-stressed transgenic plants containing the yeast metal-binding protein and analyzed them for heavy metals. Wiesend helped construct and tested a synthetic phytochelatin gene that should promote metal sequestration and tolerance in a variety of organisms. She also measured growth conditions and managed a phytoremediation field test site at the Allen Park Clay Mine. She worked with scientists from the University of Michigan and Michigan State University who use native Michigan plants to detoxify polyaromatic hydrocarborns.

Wiesend has presented posters and oral presentation at several meetings and her results are being prepared for two peer-reviewed articles where she will be a co-author.

After volunteering at a local hospital, Wiesend decided to pursue a career in medicine, and will begin medical school at Wayne State University in the fall.
