UM-Dearborn will host visit by President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders on July 26

DEARBORN---The University of Michigan-Dearborn will host a visit to the Detroit area by members of the President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders on July 26.

The President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders was established in 2001 to gather data on the status of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, to enhance their participation in government programs, and to improve their health and well-being.

The visit is co-hosted by the Michigan Asian Pacific American Chamber of Commerce.
In the morning, the group will visit community centers in Detroit and Hamtramck serving Chinese Americans and immigrants from south or southeast Asia.

In the afternoon, the members of the commission will attend briefings on the UM-Dearborn campus on issues in education, training, and economic and community development. The briefings will be conducted by government officials, leaders in the Michigan Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, and university scholars.

"Members of the Asian and Pacific American community in this region see this visit as the first step in developing a closer relationship with the commission on important issues that affect this community," according to Paul Wong, professor of sociology and dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters at UM-Dearborn.
