UM-Dearborn's Environmental Interpretive Center to offer naturalist program for children ages 9 through 12

DEARBORN---The Environmental Interpretive Center at the University of Michigan-Dearborn is accepting registration for its 2002-2003 Young Naturalist Program, a year-round study of the natural world for children ages 9 through 12.

Program sessions, which are held once a month September through June, give participants a chance to combine experiences in the outdoor classroom with indoor laboratory investigations using microscopes and other tools of science. The program calendar is as follows:

Sept. 28 -- 9:30 a.m. to noon -- Pond Study

Oct. 12 -- 9:30 a.m. to noon -- Creatures of the Soil

Nov. 8-- 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. -- Owl Prowl

Dec. 7-- 9:30 a.m. to noon -- Tree Detectives

Jan. 11 -- 9:30 a.m. to noon - Animal Tracking

Feb. 8 -- 9:30 a.m. to noon -- Life Beneath the Ice

March 1 -- 9:30 a.m. to noon -- Maple Sugaring

April 12 -- 9 a.m. to noon -- Mystery Field Trip

May 11 -- 9:30 a.m. to noon -- Birds and Migration

June 7-- 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. -- Eco Rally and Picnic

Each participant will receive a field pack, journal, hand lens, bug box, and field guides to use during the program. The cost of the program is $70; enrollment is limited to 30 children. To register, call (313) 583-6371.
