Jennifer Sroka Woodinville, Wash. resident Louis August receives service
award from UM-Dearborn DEARBORN---Louis August, founder and executive director of the Wilderness Technology Alliance, received the Community Service Award from the University of Michigan-Dearborn's alumni society in a ceremony this spring. August, a Woodinville, Wash. resident, founded Wilderness Technology Alliance in 2000, and that same year, was named by the U.S. Department of Education as one of ten recipients of the John Stanford Education Heroes award for helping at-risk students learn about technology. In 1983, August founded Trinity Technology, a computer manufacturing and service company. While providing computers to K-12 education, he recognized the growing gap between individuals who had access to technology and those without it. He began the Mount Rainier Technology Camp in 1989, a program that taught underprivileged students skills and provided a one-year technology internship. In 1999, the program was inducted into the Smithsonian Institute as a historic program in technology education. In 2001, he was awarded one of five Golden Apple Education Awards, which
is Washington State's highest award for education achievement. August
also was instrumental in the "Hands on the Land" pilot project,
which allows Washington students to create environmental education web
sites for federal agencies. ###
