Mentors needed for 'Women on the Move'

DEARBORN---"Women on the Move--College is an Option!" a program that introduces the University of Michigan-Dearborn to women receiving services through area non-profit agencies, is looking for volunteer mentors to assist the 250 metro Detroit women who will visit campus in the coming months.

The one-day program will be held twice this year--March 18 and May 13. Volunteers are needed to mentor women for each day, but mentors are not required to sign up for both days. Mentors will be needed from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the date they chose to volunteer.

The women participating in the Women on the Move program intend to further their education, an opportunity they may not have previously had. They will learn about classroom expectations, campus support groups and how other women deal with problems they have encountered in returning to school.

"By pairing each woman with a mentor for the day, we want to give her the additional encouragement to take the next step toward attending college," according to Patricia Schlaff, co-director of the program. "It is primarily through additional training that women can begin to achieve economic independence."

The program, which is in its seventh year, is a collaboration among the Women's Studies Program and the Commission for Women at UM-Dearborn; United Way Community Services; the Business Professional Women's Organization; the American Association of University Women; Soroptimist of Flat Rock and numerous human service organizations in the area.

Accompanied by mentors, participants will learn how to apply to college, register for classes and apply for financial aid and scholarships. There will be panel discussions by returning women students from UM-Dearborn who will share their own college experiences.

To volunteer as a mentor, call Heidi Kasab at (313) 593-5520. For additional information on the March 18 and May 13 events, contact Schlaff at (313) 593-5353 or Pamela McAuslan, co-director of the event, at (313) 593-5376.
