Former Ford executive appointed to UM-Dearborn School of Management post

DEARBORN--- John Kaplan, former executive vice president of Ford Motor Land Services Corporation and former vice president of finance at Ford Europe, has been named the first executive-in-residence of the School of Management at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

"As the School of Management's executive-in-residence, Mr. Kaplan will provide strategic leadership to help us achieve our mission to be the school of choice for quality business education in greater metropolitan Detroit," according to Gary Waissi, School of Management dean. "Although Mr. Kaplan's role is likely to evolve over time, he will work primarily to develop external relationships which support the many initiatives in the School of Management."

Kaplan, who retired from Ford in December, has a long relationship with the University and the School of Management. In 1963, while working at Ford as a statistician, he spent three years attending classes on the UM-Dearborn campus to finish his master of business administration degree from the Ann Arbor campus. In 1994, Kaplan began serving on the Dean's Advisory Council and became its chair in 1998.

As the School of Management's executive-in-residence, Kaplan will serve as an advisor to faculty for curriculum and course content, and help students in the areas of career planning. He also will contribute to executive education by developing content for programs and serving as an instructor and guest lecturer in the School of Management.

Kaplan will assist with recruitment of new faculty members, and the development of a corporate affiliates program, which will provide a forum for mutually beneficial business exchanges. He also will help to raise funds for various programs within the School of Management.

Kaplan began his career at Ford in 1963 and held several financial positions until he was appointed controller of product development at Ford Europe in 1976. Kaplan held various controller positions before serving as vice president of finance at Ford Europe from 1991 to 1994. He earned a degree in economics at the University of Maryland and a master of business administration at the Ann Arbor campus.
