Sroka PHONE: (313) 593-5644 DATE: Feb. 15, 2006 Registration now open for 'Women on the Move' events at UM-Dearborn DEARBORN---"Women on the Move-College is an Option!" a free
outreach program that introduces socially and economically disadvantaged
women to post-secondary education opportunities, will be held from 8 a.m.
to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 9, and then again on Thursday, April 6,
at Fairlane Center-North on
the campus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn. "The growing number of women who need to become financially independent
continues to grow each year," according to UM-Dearborn staff member
Patricia Schlaff, co-director of the Women on the Move committee. "The
Women on the Move program offers the opportunity for women to see education
as a means of independence. Each year the program grows, testifying to
its importance to the community." The program, which is in its ninth year, pairs volunteer mentors with
metro Detroit women receiving services through area non-profit agencies
to learn about campus support groups and how other women deal with the
challenges of returning to school. Accompanied by mentors, participants
will learn how to apply to college, register for classes and apply for
financial aid and scholarships. There will be panel discussions by returning
women students from UM-Dearborn who will share their own college experiences. Beverly Coleman, coordinator of the School as the Heart of the Community
program, which is in the Empowerment Zone of the Detroit Recreation Department,
will be the keynote speaker for the March 9 and April 6 events. A number of local service organizations will staff information tables
at the events. Representatives from Concordia College, Henry Ford Community
College, Michigan State University, Schoolcraft College, UM-Dearborn,
Wayne County Community College and Wayne State University will provide
information on higher education. The Women on the Move program is a collaboration with the Office of the
Provost and the Commission for Women at UM-Dearborn; the Business Professional
Women's Organization; and the American Association of University Women.
Registration for both events has begun and seating is limited. Last day to register for the March 9 event is March 1. Registration deadline for the April 6 event is March 31. Call (313) 583-6511 to register. #### The
University of Michigan-Dearborn does not necessarily endorse speakers
