Free exhibition at U-M's Detroit Center will showcase similarities between modern Detroit and ancient Rome
DEARBORN---Student researchers at the University of Michigan-Dearborn will showcase similarities between modern Detroit and ancient Rome through a window display exhibition at U-M's Detroit Center on Woodward Avenue beginning Feb. 4.
The exhibition, titled "Detroit and Rome: Building on the Past,"
details how historic buildings in both cities have survived difficult
urban transitions.

The display features archival and recent photographs of buildings in
Detroit and Rome that have been adapted to new functions, such as the
Pantheon in Rome, which now houses a Roman Catholic church, and Detroit's
1903 Temple Beth-El, which is now the Bonstelle Theatre on Woodward Avenue.
Reproductions of historic images and drawings, and more recent photographs,
drawings and watercolors of these and other buildings will be showcased
as well.
The exhibition was researched and designed by UM-Dearborn students in
the museum practice seminars taught by Melanie Grunow Sobocinski, assistant
professor of art history. The display was featured at UM-Dearborn's Alfred
Berkowitz Gallery last fall.
U-M's Detroit Center occupies the ground floor of the Orchestra Place office building next to Orchestra Hall at the confluence of the busy Mack Avenue/Martin Luther King Boulevard and Woodward Avenue corridors. The nearby area includes other educational institutions such as Wayne State University and the College for Creative Studies, as well as cultural resources like the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Science Center, and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.
