UM-Dearborn will honor community leader who promotes women's equality

DEARBORN---The University of Michigan-Dearborn Commission for Women will mark its 30th anniversary next spring by inaugurating a special award recognizing individuals who advance the cause of women's equality in southeastern Michigan.

For the past 25 years, the commission has presented the Susan B. Anthony Award annually to a member of the campus community who has advanced women's issues. Both the campus award and the new Susan B. Anthony Community Award will be presented at the group's annual ceremony on March 31.

"We expect that the individual's life and deeds will exemplify the dedicated efforts, fortitude, forcefulness and involvement of Susan B. Anthony, who challenged inequities suffered by women and who led the nation to recognize human rights," according to Roma Heaney, director of institutional research and chair of the community award selection committee at UM-Dearborn.

Nominations are currently being sought from members of the campus community and supporters in the external community. "Nominees should live, work or volunteer in southeastern Michigan, and be directly involved in enhancing the status or well-being of women or girls or directly involved in the promotion of equal rights for women," Heaney said. Deadline for nominations is Friday, Jan. 30.

For nomination forms or more information contact Heaney at rheaney@umd.umich.edu or 593-5353.
