Michael J. Schneider named professor emeritus at UM-Dearborn

DEARBORN---Michael J. Schneider, who joined the University of Michigan-Dearborn faculty in 1973, was appointed professor emeritus of biology by the U-M Regents at their July meeting. He retired from active faculty status at the end of June.

Schneider taught a wide range of introductory courses for biology majors and non-science students as well as advanced courses in plant biology and plant physiology.

He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan in 1960, a master's degree from the University of Tennessee in 1962 and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1965. Before joining the UM-Dearborn faculty, he was a research associate at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Wisconsin and assistant professor at Columbia University.

Schneider joined the UM-Dearborn faculty as associate professor in 1973 and was promoted to professor in 1977.

His research centered on plant pigments known as phytochromes and he published numerous refereed journal articles, made presentations at national and international conferences and supervised many undergraduate and graduate student research projects.

Schneider also served in numerous administrative roles, including four terms as chair of the Department of Natural Sciences, one year as associate provost in 1990 and one year as interim provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs in 1991.

He was also college ombudsman, vice chair of the Faculty Senate and member of the Faculty Senate Council. On the Ann Arbor campus, he served on the advisory committee to the vice president for research, the Senate Assembly and the Faculty Grievance Review Board. In 1991, he received the "Best in Class" award in recognition for his service to the Dearborn campus.
