Poet Lawrence Joseph to read at UM-Dearborn at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 20
DEARBORN---Poet Lawrence Joseph will read and discuss his work at 7:30
p.m. Thursday, April 20 in Room 1030 of the College of Arts, Sciences,
and Letters Building at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.
The reading is free and open to the public.

Joseph is the author of five books of poetry, most recently Into It and
Codes, Precepts, Biases, and Taboos: Poems 1973-1993, which were published
simultaneously last September by Farrar, Straus and Giroux.
John Ashbery has described Joseph's work as "poetry of great dignity,
grace, and unrelenting persuasiveness." David Lehman, in the Washington
Post, described Joseph as "a poet of fierce intensity" who "writes
with an authenticity that is earned, not just acquired."
Joseph also is the author of a prose book, Lawyerland, published by FSG
in 1997. The book has been the subject of a Columbia Law Review symposium,
"The Lawyerland Essays," and is being developed into a film
by John Malkovich.
Joseph was born in Detroit in 1948. His grandparents, Lebanese and Syrian
Catholics, were among the first Arab immigrants to Detroit. He graduated
with a bachelor's degree in English with high honors and Phi Beta Kappa
from the University of Michigan, where he also received a major Hopwood
award in poetry. He then studied English literature at Cambridge University
before returning to U-M to earn his law degree. After law school, he served
as clerk to Michigan Supreme Court Justice G. Mennen Williams.
He taught in the law school at the University of Detroit and then practiced
law in New York City before joining the faculty of St. John's University
School of Law, where he is Tinnelly Professor of Law.
His poems, prose, essays, and criticism have appeared in both national
and international publications, and his work has been widely anthologized,
most recently in the Oxford Book of American Poetry. Earlier this month,
Joseph was the third recipient of the Law and Literature Award from the
New York County Lawyer's Association. Prior recipients are Louis Auchincloss
and Louis Begley.
