Gardening program puts kids in the dirt

DEARBORN---The Environmental Interpretive Center at the University of Michigan-Dearborn is offering hands-on gardening programs for children this summer.

In the "sprouts" program, children ages 7 to 9 will sow and tend a garden plot. Other activities include gardening games, crafts, science experiments, composting and a visit to the campus honeybee hives.

In the "kinder-gardening" program, children ages 4 to 6 and their parents will share a common garden plot with other families and plant vegetables and flowers. A pizza party will be held at harvest time using the garden-grown goodies.

"Kinder-gardeners" will meet from 6:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the following Thursdays: May 19, June 2, June 9, June 16, July 7, July 21, August 11 and August 25, which is Harvest Day.

"Sprouts" will meet from 6:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the following Tuesdays: May 17, May 31, June 7, June 14, July 5, July 19, August 9 and August 23, which is Harvest Day.

The fee for either program is $35 per child. Registration forms can be printed at http://www.umd.umich.edu/dept/na/registergarden.pdf. Registration ends May 6. To register, or for more information, call (313) 583-6370.
