Workshop for Arab and Chaldean American writers

DEARBORN---The Center for Arab American Studies at the University of Michigan-Dearborn will offer a workshop for Arab and Chaldean American writers, experienced and novice, during the summer semester.

Moulouk Berry, assistant professor of modern and classical languages, will teach the Arab and Chaldean American Writers Workshop each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, May 11 through June 3 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, May 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This creative-writing workshop will focus on fiction. Taught in English, it is open to all UM-Dearborn students for college credit, but is offered to high school students and members of the community, as well. Students are expected to work on their own manuscripts. The daylong session will provide tips on publishing.

"Writing has always been an important element of Arab and Chaldean culture and in expressing that culture," Berry said. "This workshop gives students, young and old, experienced in writing or aspiring, an opportunity to hone skills in fictional writing."

The workshop will be held in Room 1093 of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters Building, 4901 Evergreen Road. UM-Dearborn students should register for Humanities 390F, CRN 32145. Non UM-Dearborn students can contact Berry at (313) 593-5429 or mberry@umd.umich.edu or the Center for Arab American Studies at (313) 583-6334, or at www.casl.umd.umich.edu/caas/ for a registration form.

The workshop is made possible in part by a gift from Ned Fawaz, president of Energy International of Canton, who is active in many community organizations.
