STAFF SENATE SUGGESTION BOX QUESTIONS AND ANSWERSQuestion #1: Received 5-17-05 - With performance appraisal time upon us again, I'd courage Staff Senate to query staff members regarding how these are handled at the Department level i.e. Are they employee or supervisor driven? What follow-up occurs between reviews, etc.? Also some follow-up with HR: what checks/balances are in place for supervisors in terms of monitoring quality of the review and appropriateness? Answer #1: The Staff Senate is working on response. Suggestion submitted to HR for response 10-10-05. Response received from HR 10-27-05: "Annual performance reviews are an important tool for leaders to formally review and provide staff feedback regarding: an individuals strengths, accomplishments, goal attainment as well as developmental opportunities. Our Human Resources consulting staff provides guidance and support to leaders and staff members for this process including training and educating both leaders and staff about the process and reviewing the completed reviews, (confidentially), to ensure appropriateness. Staff members are encouraged to contact an HR Consultant, if you have any question about your review or the process." Question #2: Received 5-17-05 Since the University has just completed two Dean's searches, I'd suggest Staff Senate follow-up with staff members in those Departments. Areas of inquiry might include: satisfaction/feedback regarding staff involvement, input from the staff representative on the search committees (what was their experience, what changes/improvements might they suggest, etc. Answer #2 - The Staff Senate submitted suggestion to Provost's office on 8-24-05 and 9-23-05. No response as of 10-26-05. Question #3: Received 5-17-05 Regarding the you make a difference award - Senate should send emails to the "everybody" email distribution list so the whole campus knows who's receiving the awards. Make some noise with it. Answer #3: The Senate will post the recipients on the Staff Senate web site. Question #4 - Received 10-4-05 at Pancake Breakfast - Add Eggs. Answer #4 - Since this event was a "Pancake" breakfast versus a standard breakfast, eggs were not included. Question #5 - Received 10-4-05 at Pancake Breakfast - Formal training with LEO. Answer #5 - Since this question was not very specific, we are assuming that the individual was referring to MPathways training for Leo. Staff Senate contacted HR and there was interchange training back in July. If anyone has any questions regarding the LEO information in MPathways, they should call HR at 3-5190. Question #6, #7 and #8 were not really questions, but favorable comments about the Staff Senate Pancake Breakfast. Thank you. Question #9 - Received 11-4-05 at Pre-Holiday Party - Whenever there is a function on Friday and staff has to travel to another part of campus, the shuttle should be available. If you can't have the shuttle available, you should probably plan events on a day other than Friday, when the shuttle is running. Answer #9 - The Senate wanted to schedule the event at a time when there are fewer classes, and that day happens to be Friday. It costs the University money for the shuttle; and, therefore, it runs Monday-Thursday. Carpooling with others from your area is always an option and parking at Fairlane Center on Friday is not a problem. |
