Student Engagement and Satisfaction Survey Results
UM-Dearborn students recently took part in two national surveys, the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and the Noel-Levitz Student Satisfaction Survey (SSI), to gage engagement and satisfaction. The University exceeds or equals national norms in several key areas according to the results. Below are the Dearborn Differences that make UM-Dearborn unique and among the leaders and best.
2011 NSSE Results
The NSSE survey benchmarks the student experience related to academic challenge, active and collaborative learning, student-faculty interaction, enriching educational experiences and supportive campus environment.
UM-Dearborn rated higher than the national averages in four key areas of the academic experience:
| 87% of students felt coursework emphasized analyzing the basic elements of an idea, experience or theory |
81% of first-year students felt UM-Dearborn had a substantial commitment to their academic success | |
62% of students had a serious conversation with students of a different ethnicity/race61% of students have had a serious conversation with students who are very different in terms of religious, political or personal beliefs | |
92% of our seniors report that they have "examined the strengths and weaknesses" of their own views on a topic or issue, higher than at other schools

UM-Dearborn students are also more satisfied with their experience and more likely to re-enroll, if they had to do it over again, than the national average. |

UM-Dearborn is benchmarked against other Great Lakes Area public colleges/universities, other Carnegie 2 college/universities and other NSSE colleges/universities that participated in the survey.
2011 SSI Results
The SSI survey benchmarks the student experience related to 12 key indicators related to academic services and campus life. Students rated their satisfaction with UM-Dearborn higher than the national averages on more than 75% of the survey questions.
UM-Dearborn students identified the areas below as important to their college experience and each of the areas ranked in the top 25% of student satisfaction:
94% of UM-Dearborn students agreed or strongly agreed UM-Dearborn provides a welcoming and inclusive campus community.
UM-Dearborn is benchmarked against all colleges/universities that participated in the SSI survey.
UM-Dearborn not only uses the results to benchmark how the University compares to other colleges/universities but more importantly how the University can better meet student expectations.
