Welcome to the first major production of the infant UM-Dearborn Players' Club. We thought it fitting, given the club's genesis from the UM-D summer Writing Center productions of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Much Ado About Nothing, to continue a Shakespearean tradition with the comic, dreamlike Twelfth Night or What You Will. Our production has kept in mind the suspended disbelief inherent in Shakespeare's subtitle "What You Will." Our particular challenge in mounting Twelfth Night was to find a balance between the literal and the imaginary, between the characters' very real emotions and the sparseness of a modest staging where the scenes are set as much with words as with wood, fabric, and extension cords. It has been my pleasure to work within a supportive university environment, particularly and graciously provided by Chancellor Little, and with a talented, enthusiastic cast dedicated to the play, the club, and theater at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Brandon Hayes December 1, 2000 From Metrotimes, December 2000: "Theater choice pick." From The Dearborn Press & Guide, Richard Marsh, December 7, 2000: "Players Club cast shows great skill...The show's final run-through featured several outstanding performances, particularly those of Matthew Ripper as Sir Andrew Aguecheek, Elisa Noeske as Sir Toby Belch, and Sandra Fitiani as Olivia...The selection of Twelfth Night was a scholarly but challenging choice for a fledgling theater company." |
