So this is my fourth play. It’s short, so I’ll write a short author’s note. This play is about death. That’s all. I don’t like to be morbid, but sometimes I guess I just am. This play is about what happens after you die. On a lighter note, does anyone want a playwright for anything? I am graduating this summer and I find myself in need of a job. I suppose there isn’t much I’m fit for, but I have skills. I can type. I can sweep floors; in fact I’ve become rather a dab hand with a broom and dustpan working at The State Theater the past couple years. I hate math, so if you’re looking for someone to do your taxes, look elsewhere. I love to paint. Plus I play a little guitar. I’d like a starting wage of about $25 an hour. Of course, that’s negotiable. Interested parties should contact me: ntwright@umich.edu. OK. That was actually kind of a long author’s note, thanks to my shameless career plug. I’ll wrap it up. Thanks for coming. As we say at The State, enjoy your show. Nathaniel Wright 02/15/03 Director’s Note To the audience: This is the third of Nathaniel’s plays that I’ve directed. All three have been startlingly different in content and approach, but they all have the same somewhat cockeyed worldview…and that, I think, is what makes them…how to put it?...fun. And with Pushing Daisies we have Nathaniel’s metaphysical play…such as it is. My only question: how is it that Nathaniel came to write such a Catholic play? A word of advice: When burying a loved one (if you haven’t yet, you likely will someday), don’t let funeral directors bully you into buying the casket with the “guaranteed to last forty years” magnesium strip.
