The Club

How the Players’ Club came to be:

The University of Michigan-Dearborn Players' Club began with a production of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, performed on June 21, 2000. The play was produced by Honors Program students Bethany Bray, Brandon Hayes, and Lori McMenamin to honor the departure of Linda Adler-Kassner, formerly director of the UM-D Writing Center. A twenty-one member cast played outside in the courtyard of the CASL Annex on the UM-D campus for an audience of approximately 130.

The response to Midsummer was so positive that the group decided to mount a second production that summer: Much Ado About Nothing, which was performed in August of 2000. This time, weather and bugs and heat drove the company indoors, and the play was acted in the School of Management Building Lecture Hall B, establishing this ampitheater-shaped hall as the club's primary performing space.

Because of the success of the summer productions and the overwhelming enthusiasm for them, the students involved decided to become an official club at UM-Dearborn.  In October of 2000, UM-Dearborn Student Government, with the encouragement of then Student Activities Coordinator, Shelly Crissman, granted the Players' Club ad hoc status.  In Fall 2001, with the approval of Crissman's sucessor, Kristine Day, the club was granted official status by Student Government.
