It's that time of the year again. The time when we’re supposed to be scared out of our minds by ugly ghouls. The people being scared are college students. The fear factor is the possibility of THE DRAFT returning to rein horror on all our bright futures.
If you examine various national polls, well over half of college students believe the draft will be reinstated. Not only that, but they believe it will be reinstated by President Bush. This is not surprising because you have many democrat surrogates such as Michael Moore, coming to campuses like ours and suggesting that the draft is going to be reinstated under Bush. This is a complete falsehood. President Bush has made zero proposals to reinstate the draft and has said he would veto any proposals to do so.
But there is one group of people who wanted to reinstate the draft, and that group is the democrats in Congress. Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY) wrote the bill last year to stir up debate saying that the US would be more reluctant to go to war if the wealthy were called to fight. Michael Moore adopted this attitude in his movie, which I like to call, “F-9/11”. He proclaimed that only the poor enter the military. Now him and other Democrats are trying to scare us “well-off” college students with THE DRAFT that looms underneath Bush and the Republicans.
On October 5th however, all Republicans and most Democrats in the House ultimately voted down Rangel’s bill by a vote of 402-2. Ironically, Rep. Rangel was not one of the congressmen to vote for the bill that he wrote.
It’s getting close to the election and college students really need to start checking the facts behind the rhetoric before they exercise their right to vote.
