KCP College Day Program
King/Chavez/Parks College Day Program
The University of Michigan-Dearborn Academic Support and Outreach
Services facilitates the King/Chavez/Parks College Day Program
Initiative, which encourages students from socially and economically
disadvantaged backgrounds to consider, explore and pursue the advantages
of post-secondary educational experiences. Our "action plan" which
we have designed to assist us with accomplishing these goals, consists
of the following components targeted for Elementary Schools, -6th
Grades, Middle Schools and High Schools.
|
|
|
| |
Designed to provide students with an introduction
to the KCP program and the services we provide. ASOS
Staff contacts the schools via telephone, visits, or
correspondence to tell them about the program before
they visit the university. |
| |
|
|
| |
Visitations are designed to serve as a
direct follow-up to the Outreach Component. Approximately
1, 350 students are brought to the campus by bus to spend
the day (30 Schools, 44+ students from each school).
While on campus, they are given a chance to see and hear
what life on campus is really like. Upon arrival, they
are given an orientation, an admissions presentation,
a campus tour and lunch. We finish the day with a wrap
up activity and then students are returned to their home
school. |

Mathematics/Composition/
Cultural Awareness Institute - |
| |
This tutoring component was designed to
provide students with an opportunity to become part of
our continuation program. Through this component, we
are able to help students develop and fine tune skills
that will be an integral part of their academic educational
success. This goal is achieved through twice monthly
Saturday classroom sessions taught by UM-Dearborn faculty
and high school teachers using their attending school's
textbooks. The program is designed for ninth and tenth
graders. On occasion, we have extended the program to
include eleventh and twelfth graders. |
| |
Summer Prep
Program- |
| |
This component is designed to expose students
to various disciplines offered throughout the university.
They will participate in a mathematics workshop for four
weeks, four days, four hours each day. |
| |
Wade
McCree Scholars Program- |
|
The University of Michigan-Dearborn participates in
the Wade McCree Scholars program with Detroit Public
Schools and Southfield Schools, sponsoring 15 students
from each system. Wade McCree Scholars are chosen by
the schools and inducted as high school freshman. Those
who meet the academic performance and attendance requirements
are eligible to receive a tuition scholarship at the
sponsoring university. ASOS provides mentoring and tutoring
for the scholars both while they are still in high school
and for those who enroll at this university. |
