Rubric for "Science Misconception" component of the Science Education Portfolio (SEP)

 

1. Statement of misconception (0 - 3 points)

     3 points: statement is clear, applicable to capstone course theme, 
     definitely is a misconception

     2 points: statement is clear, not applicable to course theme, 
     statement is a misconception

     1 point: misconception is poorly stated or not a misconception at 
     all

     0 point: statement is missing

2. Correct statement of concept (0 – 3 points)

     3 points: statement is clear, concept is correctly stated

     2 points: statement is clear, concept is somewhat incorrect

     1 point: concept is present but is largely incorrect or introduces 
     new misconceptions

     0 point: statement is missing completely

3. Way to teach (0 – 3 points)

     3 points: suggestion is relevant, age appropriate, shows 
     understanding of how students learn

     2 points: suggestion is relevant, age appropriate, could be more 
     relevant to how students learn

     1 point: suggestion is not relevant to concept to be taught or 
     activity will lead to greater student confusion

     0 point: section missing completely

 

4. Quality of writing (0 – 4 points)

     4 points: sentences are complete, grammar is excellent, no 
     spelling errors, organization is clear – in short the piece is 
     well-written

     3 points: generally well-written but there are a few errors in 
     punctuation/spelling or organization is a bit unclear

     2 points: some sentences are incomplete, some spelling errors, 
     organization is muddled

     1 point: more than half of the sentences are incomplete, 
     paragraph structure is largely missing, difficult to determine what 
     student in saying

     0 point: description makes no coherent sense, multiple errors in 
     grammar, spelling, etc

5. Thoughtfulness/college level (0 – 4 points)

4 points: entire SEP component shows thoughtful consideration of topic, presentation of information, etc is at college level

3 points: presentation at college level but it appears that the effort was "last minute", partially incomplete

2 points: some thoughtful analysis provided but not consistently present throughout

1 point: presentation barely at college level, mistakes in concept are present

0 point: ideas, writing is not at college level, minimal or no consideration given to the topic

 

6. References (0 – 2 points)

     2 points: references are in correct (APA or MLA) format

     1 point: most references are in correct format

     0 point: no references are in correct format

7. Format as html (0 - 1 point)

     1 point: format is html

     0 point: format is not html

8. Length (500 word minimum) (0 – 1 point)

     1 point: length met

     0 point: length not met
