Rubric for "Inquiry Lesson" component of the Science Education Portfolio (SEP) 

 

Based on a 20 point maximum

1. Statement of the grade level that lesson is designed for (0- points)

2 points: Grade level is identified at the beginning of lesson and lesson itself is appropriate for the identified grade level

1 point: Grade level is identified, but lesson is not appropriate for that grade

0 points:  Grade level is not identified anywhere in the lesson plan

  

2. Lesson objectives (0-2 points)

2 points: Either MI or NSES science objectives and specific student created objectives are clearly identified

1 point: Either MI or NSES science objectives and specific student created objectives are not clearly identified or are mssing

0 points: Neither MI or NSES science objectives and specific student created objectives are present

   

3. References listed (0-2 points)

2 points: Citation for references is complete and in proper format

1 point: Numerous mistakes in citation format

0 points: Citation is completely missing or contains more than 4 major errors

4. Use of inquiry method (0-4 points)

4 points: The lesson correctly uses each stage of the learning cycle to promote student inquiry

3 points: One stage of the learning cycle is missing a crucial element

2 points: At least two stages of the learning cycle are missing or are incorrectly developed

1 point: Several stages of the learning cycle are missing or are incorrectly developed

0 points: Lesson does not employ the learning cycle method

 

5. Materials needed (0-1 point)

1 point: All materials that are needed in the procedure section are clearly described

0 points: Needed materials missing or not clearly described

 

6. Lesson detail (0-3 points)

3 points: All stages of the lesson are clearly described in enough detail so that someone else could teach the lesson

2 points: All stages of the lesson are present, detail is lacking, but procedure can be inferred from the rest of the lesson

1 point: Parts of the lesson are unclear or missing so that it would be difficult for someone else to teach the lesson just relying on the lesson plan

0 points: So many of the parts of the lesson are missing or unclear that it is difficult to determine what or how the students will be taught a scientific concept

 

7. Quality of writing (0-4 points)

4 points: sentences are complete, grammar is excellent, no spelling errors, organization is clear - in short the piece is well written

3 points: Generally well written but there are a few errors in punctuation/spelling or organization is a bit unclear

2 points: Some sentences are incomplete, some spelling errors, organization is muddled

1 point: More than half of the sentences are incomplete, paragraph structure is largely missing, difficult to determine what student is saying

0 points: Description makes no coherent sense, multiple errors in grammar, spelling, etc.

 

8. Format (0 – 2 points)

2 points: Document is formatted as an html file in 12 point font and is reay to be posted to the SEP

1 point: Format is html file but it appears that student has cut and pasted document from elsewhere and not adjusted/reviewed format

 0 points: Document submitted in other than html format or only as hard copy to instructor
