Rubric for "Current Event Description" component of the Science Education Portfolio (SEP)

 

Based on a 20 point maximum

 

1. Summary of event - needs to be sufficient and complete so that reader knows what happened (0-4 points)

4 points: event clearly, concisely summarized, reader knows what happened/ what was reported  

3 points: event clear in general but either the statement was nearly verbatim (i.e., no summary given) or significant parts of the summary were omitted 

2 points: reader has to deduce what the event was because too little information was presented or the summary was too rambling or incoherent 

1 point: reader has a general idea what the event was based on other information in document 

0 points: no summary of event provided

 

2. Science that was incorrect/unclear/ incomplete in reporting of event is identified (0-3 points) 

3 points: incorrect/ incomplete science is clearly identified by student 

2 points: based on explanation, it appears that student identified the problem but student did not clearly state this 

1 point: student identified something that was incomplete or incorrect but did not identify all of it 

0 points: science was incorrect but not identified by the student

 

3. If science was incorrect/unclear/incomplete, provision of correct/complete explanation given (0-3 points) 

3 points: explanation was correct and complete (3 points assigned if original explanation in article was correct and complete) 

2 points: some part of explanation was incorrect or some additional information was necessary to provide a complete understanding 

1 point: some part of explanation was quite wrong 

0 points: science was incorrect/incomplete and student did not provide information to address the situation

 

4. Quality of writing (0-4 points)

4 points: sentences are complete, grammar is excellent, no spelling errors, organization is clear – in short the piece is well written

3 points: generally well-written but there are a few errors in punctuation/spelling or organization is a bit unclear

2 points: some sentences are incomplete, some spelling errors, organization is muddled

1 point: more than half of the sentences are incomplete, paragraph structure is largely missing, difficult to determine what student in saying

0 points: description makes no coherent sense, multiple errors in grammar, spelling, etc

 

5. Minimum length met (0 – 1 points)

1 point: length met

0 points: length not met

 

6. References listed (0-2 points) 

2 points: citation for references is complete and in proper format 

1 point: citation is largely complete or format is largely correct

0 points: citation is completely missing or contains more than 2 major errors

7. Format (0 – 3 points)

3 points: document is formatted as an html file with text in 12 point font and is ready to be posted to the SEP 

2 points: format is html file but it appears that student has cut and pasted document from elsewhere and not adjusted/reviewed format 

1 point: document submitted electronically but not in html format 
0 points: document submitted only as hard copy to instructor
