Rubric for "Activity Related to Science Standards" component of the Science Education Portfolio (SEP)

 

Based on a 20 point maximum

 

1. Supplies (0-1 point)

1 point: complete listing of supplies with indication for individual, group (size of group) or teacher demonstration

0.5 points: indication of individual/group/teacher activity is omitted

 0 points: supplies list has major items missing and no indication of group/individual activity

  

2. Procedure (0-2 points)

2 points: procedure is sufficiently detailed and should be easy to repeat

1 point: procedure omits some steps that appear to be obvious

0 points: procedure is inadequate in terms of replication

 

3. Level Appropriateness (0-1 point)

1 point: level of activity is appropriate for age/grade level indicated

0 points: level is inappropriate or not stated

 

4. Relationship to NSES or MCF-Science Standards for specific science content course (0-1 point)

1 point: activity chosen is directly applicable to Standards for stated science area (physical, earth/space, life science)

0 points: activity is indirectly or not at all connected to Standards for stated science area

 

5. Statement of ALL applicable Science Standards (either NSES or MCF-Science Standards) (0-2 points)

2 points: all relevant Standards written out

1 point: some Standards written out, but other applicable Standards missing

0 points: no Standards are indicated or only Standard numbers are indicated or most are missing

 

6. College level description of science concept taught (5 points)

5 points: all parts of concept described completely and correctly at a college level

4 points: at least one part of concept described incompletely or incorrectly or not at college level

3 points: at least two parts of concept described incompletely or incorrectly or not at college level

2 points: several parts of concept described incompletely or incorrectly or not at college level

1 point: concept described vaguely and not at college level

0 points: inadequate/ completely missing or grossly incorrect explanation of concept

 

7. Quality of writing (4 points)

4 points: sentences are complete, grammar is excellent, no spelling errors, organization is clear – in short the piece is well written

3 points: generally well-written but there are a few errors in punctuation/spelling or organization is a bit unclear

2 points: some sentences are incomplete, some spelling errors, organization is muddled

1 point: reader has a general idea what the event was based on other information in document

0 points: description makes no coherent sense, multiple errors in grammar, spelling, etc

 

8. Format (0 – 3 points)

 3 points: document is formatted as an html file with text in 12 point font and is ready to be posted to the SEP 

2 points: format is html file but it appears that student has cut and pasted document from elsewhere and not adjusted/reviewed format 

1 point: document submitted electronically but not in html format

 0 points: document submitted only as hard copy to instructor

 

9. References listed (1 point) 

1 point: references (including citation of Standards) listed in proper format

0 point: references missing or not in proper format
