Inquiry Lesson Plan Format

Lesson title:

Grade level:  Be specific - no more than a two grade range is allowed.  You don't need to include grade level in each lesson unit

Science Lesson Objective(s) (this is from either the MI or National Science Standards):  Be sure and state which set of objectives you are using

Concept(s) to be invented (can also be called your lesson objective):  Write according to format discussed in class

Materials needed:

Resources used (references):  Written in APA format

Safety/management precautions:  If appropriate

Engage:
What behavior standards will I set?
How will those standards be enforced?
How will I introduce the lesson without telling the students the concept?
What specific explorable question will the students be focused on?

Exploration:
State the focus (explorable) question.
Which process skills will be used?
What is the precise concept the students will explore?
What will the children do?
Be sure and include what kinds of instructions the children will need so the activity is directed
What questions will I ask to encourage student exploration?

Explanation/Concept Invention:
How does the exploration activity relate to the concept?
What questions will I ask about the information collected in the exploration stage?
How will I help students to process and mentally organize the information?
How will I use the information to guide students to a correct formation of the science concept?
What concept lables, descriptions (terms) should the children discover?

Expansion of the Idea:
Which process skill will be used?
How will the idea be expanded (applied to a different situation)?
How will I require the students to use the language of the new concept?
What are some examples of how the concept encourages the students to see relationships among science/technology/society/their own lives?

Evaluation*:
How will the students show what they have learned (about the concept, about various process skills)?
What types of hands-on activities will the students do?
What questions will I ask?

*This stage can occur anywhere in the lesson, although every lesson should at least culminate with some sort of evaluation so the teacher knows if the students are ready to progress to the next concept.

Your lesson plan should include each of the headings underlined above.  It should not include the questions that follow each heading.  The questions are only there to guide you when writing each section.

Like other components, this one must be submitted as an html document.

The document must be in 12 point font.
