| Students, Staff, Administrators & Faculty for Equality at the University of Michigan-Dearborn |
The Students, Staff, Administrators & Faculty for Equality (S.A.F.E.) Program at the University of Michigan – Dearborn provides an avenue through which all people can actively show their support of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. This program is a collaboration between several campus departments and offices, and has strong support from the administration.
S.A.F.E. Program participants (or “allies”) are identified by displaying the UM-Dearborn S.A.F.E. placard in their work or living space. By displaying the S.A.F.E. placard, they are visually representing that they are committed to providing a safe haven, a listening ear, and support for anyone dealing with issues related to sexual orientation or gender identity. Students and employees will know that it is safe to be themselves and to talk about issues involving this aspect of their lives. In order to be a UM-Dearborn S.A.F.E ally, interested persons must attend a two-hour session that includes information about the S.A.F.E Program, explains what it means to be an ally, identifies campus and community resources available for LGBT people, and ends with a panel discussion led by members of the LGBT community. The session emphasizes that this program is not meant to be a substitution for the Counseling Center, nor are allies being trained to be counselors. The UM-Dearborn S.A.F.E Program is designed as a resource and referral program only. For more information about the S.A.F.E program, or to schedule a S.A.F.E. Training, contact the Women's Resource Center at (313) 583-6445 or safeinfo@umd.umich.edu or visit the Women's Resource Center.
