Semester vs. Quarter Systems
The University of Michigan-Dearborn is on the semester system. Under the semester system, the institution has two 15-week semesters, a 15-week summer semester, and two 7.5-week summer sessions (held concurrently with the 15-week summer semester).
Summer Session I is from May to the end of June. Summer Session II is from July to August. The full 15-week summer term runs May through August. Note: All classes are not offered during all three summer sessions.
Under the quarter system, the institution has three 11-week quarters and an 11-week summer session and/or two 5.5-week summer sessions.
Quarter hours are converted to semester hours at a rate of 2 semester hours for 3 quarter hours. Thus, a 3-credit course under the quarter system would transfer as 2 credits to the semesters system.
