What is Orientation and is it Mandatory? Orientation is a one-day program focused on getting incoming students (freshmen and transfer) acclimated to the policies, procedures and services available to them at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Orientation for all freshmen is mandatory and the sessions run from late May though mid-August for students admitted in the Fall semester. Transfer students are not required to attend, however it is highly encouraged since it is the best opportunity to meet with an academic advisor. The half-day Transfer Orientation sessions run from late April through late August. There are Winter Orientation programs in October, November and December for Winter semester admits as well as a Summer Orientation program in April for all Summer semester admits.
What should I bring with me to Orientation? - Photo Identification

Will I be charged for attending Orientation? Yes, there is a $75 fee. The fee is assessed to all incoming freshman and transfer students who attend an orientation session, regardless of the semester in which you start your classes. The fee covers university expenses for placement exams and all orientation materials. There is no charge for parent orientation.
Where can I find resources for students with disabilities? If you have a disability that you would like to make us aware of, please contact the Office of Counseling and Support Services. Every effort will be made to accommodate your circumstances.
Will I take placement and/or qualifying tests at Orientation? No, you will need to take placement exams at least two to three weeks before attending your orientation session. This will ensure that you will receive your placement exam results in time for your academic advising session.
