Coverage Highlights

• $1,000,000 per accident or illness
• 100% coverage up to $5000 (after the deductible)
• 80% coverage from $5,001 to $40,000
• 100% coverage from $40,001 to $250,000

Note: These are percentages of reasonable and customary cost, which are the amounts that the insurance company will cover if it pays for services. You will ultimately receive services at the least cost, especially when totals might exceed $5000, by going to a Preferred Provider doctor or hospital.

• Annual $50 Deductible per covered injury or sickness.
• 90% coverage for prescription drugs (excludes birth control, acne medicines).
• Costs of pregnancy and childbirth covered (limited coverage if pregnancy began before enrollment).
• Both inpatient and outpatient coverage (for example: hospital room and board, physician's fees, laboratory test, x-rays, ambulance, etc.)
• Some coverage for mental health problems and drug or alcohol abuse
• TB screening
• Medical evacuation and repatriation coverage
• Routine eye exam once per policy year at University Health Services

Current Rates

The monthly premium rate for September 1, 2010 to August 31, 2011 is $99.00. Students/scholars enrolled in the plan for part or all of a calendar month will be billed for the entire calendar month, as the monthly premium cannot be pro-rated (2010-11 University of Michigan International Plan, Health Insurance Plan Brochure).

The International Office will, at the beginning of each semester and/or month, apply the health insurance premium to all active F-1 and J-1 accounts.

Students enrolled in classes or on OPT for the Fall 2011 semester will be assessed twice a year for coverage up to August 31st.   See Tables 2 & 3 Insurance Coverage Periods and Premium. Students enrolled in classes or on OPT for the winter, spring or summer semesters of 2012 will be billed once a year for coverage up to August 31, 2012.
