Celeste Alexander

Sophomore
Canton, MI
Major: Business

Graduated from Plymouth High School

Most memorable experience of campus: When Patch Adams spoke to UM-Dearborn. Hundreds of people attended his powerful and inspirational presentation of how he came to be the person he is today.  It was a phenomenal experience.

Advice for prospective students: Have fun!  Going to college doesn’t have to be all work and no play.  Join a few student organizations, hang out on campus after class gets out, and get to know new people. That is the advice I was given and my college experience has been AWESOME!

John Bonnello

Sophomore
Canton, MI
Major:Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Hispanic Studies

Graduated from Salem High School

Most memorable experience of campus:  One day in the fall, I walked out of the University Center expecting the normal scene of colored leaves on the floor and people walking from one class to another, instead there was a full fledged festival set up!  There were tents, hay, scarecrows, and other decorations along with all kinds of activities including pumpkin carving!  It's one of my favorite things about the University of Michigan-Dearborn:  you never know what crazy things will appear when you least expect it!

Advice for prospective students:  You should try anything and everything, especially the things that make you feel uncomfortable.  You never know what you're going to find out you really like, whether it be juggling or board games (we have clubs for both!).  The University brings people of all different walks of life together for a reason. Take advantage of all of the unique opportunities that may come your way!

Miriam Bukhsh

Junior
Bloomfield, MI
Major:
Biochemistry

Graduated from International Academy High School

Most memorable experience of campus: When Tim Wise, a nationally renowned anti-racist activist, spoke at UM-Dearborn’s Conversation on Race lecture series. Students, staff, and faculty from all over campus came to listen to Wise’s presentation. It brought about a strong sense of community and a desire to learn how to better understand ourselves and treat others.

Advice for prospective students: Take your time, visit the campus, talk with current students and alumni, and explore all of your options before you make a final decision. UM-Dearborn is a smaller university that makes it easy to talk to professors and advisors to find the right information. Constantly collecting information and asking questions about a college is the best way to figure out if the college is the right fit…and when you find the college that is perfect for you, you’ll just know it!

Nancy Elanjithara

Sophomore
Troy, MI
Major:
English

Graduated from Troy Athens High School

Most memorable experience of campus: Going to my first college class because of all the anticipation and excitement of finally being able to go to college. The class was sociology and my professor was really cool and funny. The environment was completely different from high school.

Advice for prospective students: Make sure you manage your time well and try not to procrastinate on projects and papers!

Joshua Gramlich

Senior
Clinton Township, MI
Major:
History

Graduated from L’Anse Creuse High School

Most memorable experience of campus: One semester, I went to the library every morning at 8 am to do research for a project in one of my classes. It doesn't seem like something that should be memorable, but for some reason I can remember, vividly, the absolute silence…no one was around that early! It was a great place to work intensely on my project!

Advice for prospective students: Visit the campuses! The best way to get a feel for a college is to see students interacting with one another. You’ll also be able to get an idea of whether or not that college’s facilities fit your needs. Also, going to college with an undecided or undeclared major is not necessarily a bad thing. It’s an opportunity for you to explore your interests. After one year of exposure to a variety of courses, you may feel (as I did after my first year) that what interested you in high school is no longer appealing.

Sarah Idriss

Junior
Dearborn Heights, MI
Major:
Marketing and Communications

Graduated from Crestwood High School

Most memorable experience of campus: Planning Spring Blowout and Winter Blast with the Student Activities Board. These are two of our biggest events on campus. The planning was crazy, but the events were a huge hit with the students and I can’t wait to plan them again!

Advice for prospective students: Really take your time getting to know the campus and the ‘college feel.’ It was helpful when I had someone show me around. I felt like I knew where my classes were and it made me feel more comfortable. Also, college was much different than high school and I learned a lot about time management. Don’t forget to have fun! I don’t know where I’d be without student life.

Michael Micheletti

Sophomore
Dearborn Heights, MI
Major:
Physics

Graduated from Annapolis High School

Most memorable experience of campus: It was during welcome week when the school brought in various activities. My friend Sara even got me to do a rock climbing challenge even though I am afraid of heights.

Advice for prospective students: Find a balance between fun and studying. College is about learning how to make the most of your time. Finding the perfect amount of fun and work is vital.

Matthew Myers

Sophomore
Novi, MI
Major:
Criminal Justice and Digital Forensics

Graduated from Walled Lake Western High School

Most memorable experience of campus: Watching the annual Cardboard Boat Race across the Chancellor’s Pond in my first semester. Free food and watching some of the boats sink in the middle of the pond made for a memorable experience!

Advice for prospective students: You need to realize that college is on a different level than high school and you need to work hard to succeed. That may mean cutting out some time with your friends to study a little harder for a test.

Deena Sleiman

Sophomore
Dearborn Heights, MI
Major:
Biology

Graduated from Dearborn High School

Most memorable experience of campus: When I met with my Pre-Professional Health Advisor, Dr. Debalina Bandyopadhyay. She really helped me develop a timeline of my classes for Pre-Dentistry and gave me really helpful advice.

Advice for prospective students: Explore all of your options before you make your final decision. Talk to current students, faculty, and alumni. Decide what qualities are most important to you in a university. Take a campus tour, speak with an admissions counselor, or even visit during a college visit day! Don’t be afraid to ask questions and learn more about the campus.

Shelby Wilson

Sophomore
Belleville, MI
Major:
Behavioral Sciences

Graduated from Huron High School

Most memorable experience of campus: I got to hear Patch Adams speak! So many people came to hear him, and he was such an interesting and inspirational speaker.

Advice for prospective students: Visit lots of campuses and learn as much as you can. Make sure the schools meet your needs as far as academic interests and student life. Once you get to school, don’t wait to get involved! Join organizations and take advantage of the resources available to you.
