| Miriam Bukhsh Junior Major: Biochemistry Graduated from International Academy High School | Career Plans: Attend medical school to either become a pediatrician or emergency medical personnel. Activities/Hobbies: I love art! I enjoy visiting museums like the Detroit Institute of Arts, studying artwork from different cultures, and creating unique art pieces. Favorite spot on campus: The atrium of the Science Learning and Research Center. It’s a nice, quiet place to study. Most memorable experience of campus: When Tim Wise, a nationally renowned anti-racist activist, spoke at UM-Dearborn’s Conversation on Race lecture series. Students, staff, and faculty from all over campus came to listen to Wise’s presentation. It brought about a strong sense of community and a desire to learn how to better understand ourselves and treat others. Advice for prospective students: Take your time, visit the campus, talk with current students and alumni, and explore all of your options before you make a final decision. UM-Dearborn is a smaller university that makes it easy to talk to professors and advisors to find the right information. Constantly collecting information and asking questions about a college is the best way to figure out if the college is the right fit…and when you find the college that is perfect for you, you’ll just know it! |

| Michelle Burke Junior Major: Marketing with Public Relations Certificate Graduated from Salem High School Transferred from Schoolcraft College | Career Plans: Sports Marketing or Public Relations Activities/Hobbies: As a full-time student, I stay pretty busy working two jobs. I love watching football, playing soccer, and volunteering for the Canton Soccer Club. Favorite spot on campus: The contemplative garden. It is a very peaceful place to study and clear your head from the hustle and bustle of college life. Most memorable experience of campus: When Julie Lavine, program manager for the redesigned 2011 Ford Explorer, spoke on campus. Julie talked about all the new technology that will be on the Explorer like airbags that come out of the seatbelt. Her presentation validated that marketing and business is the right field for me. Julie’s talk reminded me how important it is to be a part of something bigger, something life changing, and memorable. Advice for prospective students: At UM-Dearborn, professors will show you that they care and will know you by name; you are not just another student to them. When you come to campus, make a difference! Leave your footprint. It’s important to find something you love to do and get involved. We are a smaller college, so you won’t just get lost in the crowd! |

| Glenn Cantwell Senior Majors: Psychology and Political Science Graduated from River Ridge High School, Florida Transferred from Pasco Hernando Community College | Career Plans: Pursue a career in the health sciences and psychology and have a rewarding career focused on helping people. I hope to earn a master’s degree in Health Sciences and, if my brain isn't fried, possibly go on to earn a Ph.D.
Activities/Hobbies: Music is a passion, especially playing the guitar and piano. I enjoy spending time with friends and family, watching movies, and attending concerts, too. Favorite spot on campus: The Chancellor's Pond. It's a great place to study because the scenery is beautiful, the fountain sounds are relaxing, and it is usually quiet. Most memorable experience of campus: One day in my Earth Science course, our professor took us to the Henry Ford Estate to examine how the entire estate was electrically powered by the Rouge River. We toured the estate, and it was the first time I got a real interactive look at the area around our campus, and its historical surroundings. Advice for prospective students: Searching for the right college can become quite tedious and daunting. Many colleges look the same on paper and seem to offer the same opportunities, but pay close attention to the differences because that is what matters most! I continue to find things I love about my college all the time. UM-Dearborn may be a commuter college, but underestimating this college would be a big mistake. I expected a lot from UM-Dearborn when I came here, and I am finding that I am receiving more than I initially expected all the time! |

| Jacob Collison Senior Major: Biology, Psychology and Marketing Graduated from Washtenaw Technical Middle College | Career Plans: To become a doctor of genetic abnormalities or metabolic pathways or to pursue dentistry. Activities/Hobbies: I’m an active member of multiple organizations around campus and can always be found running between buildings to support them all. Favorite spot on campus: I’m usually hanging out at the Wolf Pack and Student Activities Board offices. Something is always going on here - plenty of programming for upcoming events, and just lots of laughs. You’ll also find me at the ice rink in the Fieldhouse every Wednesday and Thursday night for broomball games. Most memorable experience of campus: The famed card board boat race. All of the campus student organizations compete. I built a boat for the Wolf Pack, and our team dressed up as pirates and Vikings. We set our boat in the water thinking we would have a shot at the top prize, but 10 seconds into the race our boat capsized. We did not take first place that day, but we took home the coveted Titanic Award. Advice for prospective students: Why should you come to the University of Michigan-Dearborn? There are hundreds of reasons, but one that I think is important is the connection to professors. As a junior, you’ll have a “Faculty Adviser”, a professor who’s practiced in the field you are interested in. You meet with them throughout the semester, and they help you select courses and gain knowledge in your field of study. Also, all the professors do research and often take on undergraduate students to help them with their projects. |

| Joshua Gramlich Junior Major: History Graduated from L’Anse Creuse High School | Career Plans: Possibly attend law school or go on to earn a Ph.D. in History and become a college professor. Being on the History Channel wouldn’t be too bad either, but that might be a bit of a stretch! Activities/Hobbies: In the warmer months I enjoy Parkour, free-running, Frisbee, and rollerblading. Cooking is my primary hobby during the winter. Favorite spot on campus: The patio in the back of the Social Sciences Building. It has several benches and is surrounded by a big tree that provides plenty of shade. Not only does this spot provide me quick access to the Social Sciences Building, where I spend most of my time for classes, but it also gives a scenic view of the woods behind campus. Most memorable experience of campus: One semester, I went to the library every morning at 8 am to do research for a project in one of my classes. It doesn't seem like something that should be memorable, but for some reason I can remember, vividly, the absolute silence…no one was around that early! It was a great place to work intensely on my project! Advice for prospective students: Visit the campuses! The best way to get a feel for a college is to see students interacting with one anther. You’ll also be able to get an idea of whether or not that college’s facilities fit your needs. Also, going to college with an undecided or undeclared major is not necessarily a bad thing. It’s an opportunity for you to explore your interests. After one year of exposure to a variety of courses, you may feel (as I did after my first year) that what interested you in high school is no longer appealing. |

| Veronica Hall Senior Major: Earth Science with Geographic Information Systems Certificate Graduated from Adlai E. Stevenson High School | Career Plans: To obtain a graduate degree in geosciences and work toward a better understanding of global climate change, it’s impact on various regions, and the future of our planet. Activities/Hobbies: I enjoy bike riding through my Livonia neighborhood, Irish folk dancing, and hanging out with friends and family on the weekends. Favorite spot on campus: The quiet study area on the second floor of the Science Learning and Research Center (a.k.a. the SLERK). It has a great view of the natural areas, comfy chairs, and is close to all of my classes. Most memorable experience of campus: Being chosen as an Orientation Leader in 2009. I was really excited about it! It helped me to branch out and meet different people that I may have never had the chance to interact with before. I was able to understand and appreciate all of the inner-workings of UM-Dearborn and meet people in different campus clubs and student organizations. Advice for prospective students: Choosing a college is not a time to window shop and be done with it. Interaction with the campus is the best way to find out if a university fits who you are. Talk with the professors in the areas that you have interest in and find out what they specialize in to determine if the department is a right fit for you. If you are interested in clubs, e-mail the club president and stop by to see what they are really about. The university you choose may be your home for the next four or more years, and it is important to feel like you belong and will make a difference on campus! |

| Katelyn McDowell Senior Major: Psychology Graduated from Mercy High School | Career Plans: My goal is to attend law school. I have a co-op position with Bodman PLC, a prominent law firm in metro-Detroit. It’s helping me really understand what a typical day at a law firm is like. Activities/Hobbies: Playing tennis, visiting friends from other colleges, going to “dinner and a movie”, and spending time with family. Favorite spot on campus: The fourth floor of the CASL building is the behavioral sciences department, which includes my major - psychology. It is a great spot to study because it is super quiet, and it has a computer lab which is available to use. Most memorable experience of campus: Being an extra in a movie. A casting company sent out an email asking students to volunteer as an extra for a movie. My brother and I emailed back and were chosen. On the day of filming, all of the volunteers were in a room waiting for our turn. During the wait, the film crew gave out prizes and fed us! We were actually in a scene where we pretended to take the LSAT with both Hilary Swank and Minnie Driver. Advice for prospective students: Have an idea of which kind of college is right for you. Are you comfortable and financially able to live on-campus? Do you want smaller class sizes and to be able to know your professors? After discussing some questions with your parents, explore your options for college. You really get a feel for the campus by visiting, going on a tour and possibly talking with an advisor. Just see if it is right for you! |

| Fareed Shalhout Sophomore Major: Business Graduated from Cass Technical High School | Career Plans: To be become a successful business leader while working as an administrator at a major college or university. Also, I plan to earn a master's degree in Business Administration. Activities/Hobbies: Traveling and Photography Favorite spot on campus: The Chancellor’s Pond. It’s a calm place to hang out! Most memorable experience of campus: Meeting up with a few of my friends and having lunch at the Chancellor’s Pond. The environment is so relaxing! Advice for prospective students: The most important advice I can give to a prospective student is to make sure you get involved on campus. At UM-Dearborn, there are over 140 organizations including fraternities and sororities, so there are tons of ways you can get involved. I encourage freshmen to stop by their professor’s office hours to get to know them outside of the classroom. Professors are very welcoming, and it enhances your college experience. Look for a university that you would actually want to wake up and go to every morning. For me, it was the University of Michigan-Dearborn! GO BLUE! |
