Introduction Overview Narratives Exhibits Reflection

  • The Mitten project that Jennifer and I worked on went very well and was enriching for both our students and ourselves.  Our students used technology to truly become historians and were able to learn the material at a deeper level than with more traditional teaching methods.  Our students enjoyed virtually all of the elements of the project, although some did not utilize their time very well and this led to some confusion at the end of  the seven week period.  I will try to allow more class time to complete the project requirements, but also have more check-in points where specific material is due.  One additional difficulty was that students used different technology at home that they were using at school so we had compatibility problems both within the student groups and then when the final project was compiled.
  • Teaching history with the addition of electronic databases, educational software, and office software go hand in hand.  Students have millions of primary source documents at their fingertips and the ability to compile them easily and elegantly into their own electronic portfolios.  The level of understanding is deepened and enjoyment of the class is increased by adding a technology component.
