- During
this semester Jennifer Girardin and I worked together to implement a
greater use of technology into the material that is covered in both by
9th grade US History course and my Advanced Placement US History
course.
- We
concentrated mainly on my freshmen classes and worked on a semester
long project we titled "Decades of Discovery." The
classes were put into groups and then assign a decade ranging from the
1930's to the 1980's. The group then decided on one particular
aspect of the decade on which they wished to focus. They were
required to fill multiple requirements for the final project to be
handed in. They used the Libraries resources which included books,
databases, presentation software, PowerPoint presentations, digital
photographs and digital movies. They were provided with one
class day a week to work on the project and were able to meet with one
of us after school if they wished.
- With
the AP class we had the students add a technological aspect to a
research paper on influential Supreme Court decisions of the 20th
Century. They included an electronic presentation (most used
PowerPoint) of the history of the case, the majority and minority
opinion, and the social impact of the case. With the paper they
could not be partisan, but with their presentation they were able to
include how they personally felt about the case they researched.
- The
students did a tremendous job with the project. They were able
to create a professional looking presentation and learn to use many
different resources the school offers of which they may not have been
aware. For the most part they enjoyed working on the projects
and creating the materials for their presentation. They became
much more confident about what they could achieve in a relatively
short amount of time. The students were also able to interact
with one another and with us on a different level then they might in
an ordinary classroom setting.
- Overall
I was very pleased with the project and will implement it into my
class again next year with only minor alterations.
