        4. Use general purpose productivity tools and peripherals to support personal productivity, remediate skill deficits, and facilitate learning throughout the curriculum.

Objectives:

-Students will be able to revise and edit their rough draft speech based on the web they created using Kidspiration.

Materials:

   -Kidspiration web

   -Paper

   -Pencil

   -Partner

   -Stopwatch (one per group)

Purpose:

-This lesson will teach the students how to revise and edit their speech.  Students will listen to each other's speeches and time them with a stopwatch.  Students will discuss their speech with a partner in order to better their speech when they write the final draft.  This lesson will also allow the students to practice their speech since they will be memorizing it for their final oral review.

Anticipatory Set:

-Teacher says, "What do you usually think about when you are giving a speech?"  Teacher will accept reasonable answers.

-Teacher says, "Do you ever think about how long or short your speech is?  This is going to be an important element of your oral report."

Check for Understanding: [Will occur after Modeling]

-After each example speech, the teacher and students will have a short discussion about what was wrong or right with the speech.

Modeling:

-Teacher will give an example speech.  The teacher will say the speech twice; the first time the teacher will talk very fast and the second time the teacher will give the speech at a normal pace.

-Teacher will remind students that they have to memorize their speech.  They are not allowed to bring a paper up with them when they give their speech.

Guided Practice:

-Teacher will divide the class into groups of two.  Teacher will explain that each person is going to listen to their partner's speech twice.  The first time they will listen for mistakes and their partner will correct the mistakes.  The second time, they will time their partner's speech.  After that, the partners will switch roles and follow the same steps for the other person's speech.  Students will discuss what they liked and what should be changed in the speeches.  After both students have given their speech, students will trade papers with their partner and will look for any mechanical errors in the speech.

Independent Practice:

-Students work with their partners on the task stated above.

Closure:

-Class comes together and the teacher gives the students some questions to think about while writing their final draft.  Some example questions are:  Was my speech too long/short?  How can I lengthen/shorten it?  What are the most important things in my speech that I have to make sure to say?
