Overview: Integrating Technology into Early Childhood Education Courses
Semester One Project:

During Fall 2003 I focused on integrating technology into EDB 421/521, Issues in Early Education and Child Care. The class was held in 1165 SOM which allowed me to make use of the internet, computer connection and VHS player during my class.

My objectives were:

  • to conduct online discussions for my class on current issues using Eres
  • to use powerpoint for class lectures
  • to demonstrate internet resources and links on current issues
  • to encourage students to join advocacy groups which use the internet to contact legislators and other politicians on issues impacting children and families .
Summary of Semester One Project's Accomplishments:

To meet the above objectives I incorporated the following changes to the course:

Semester Two Project:

During Winter 2004 I integrated technology into EDC 410/511, Developing Constructive Peer Social Relationships. The class was held in the newly acquired School of Education building, Fairlane Center South. Once the equipment was installed I was able to use the internet, computer connection and VHS player in the classroom.

My objectives were:

  • to experience a variety of options for online courses
  • to improve the quality of my lectures with power point slides
  • to enable students to access and download overheads and on line resources on social emotional development
  • to differentiate assignments for graduate students and undergraduate students
  • to create a greater sense of community among students using the internet

Summary of Semester Two Project's Accomplishments:

To meet my objectives I incorporated technology into this course in the following ways:

  • I created separate course pages for graduate and undergraduate students using VLT
  • I put my lectures for EDC 410/511 on powerpoint
  • I created an assignment in which graduate students participated in an online book discussion group over a three week period in which they discussed guiding questions based on the book Delicate Threads by D. Staub. The book focused on friendships between children with disabilities and typically developing children.
  • Undergraduate students were given an assignment in which they participated in online discussions based on two case studies.
  • Each group of students evaluated the assignment for ease of use and usefulness to their learning. There were numerous positive comments about learning from one another.

Semester Three Project:

During Fall 2004 I further extended my use of technology  to enhance the quality of my classroom teaching. I taught two courses, EDC 445/545, Developmental Assessment of the Young Child, and EDB 421/521, Issues in Early Education and Child Care. Both courses were taught in 182 Fairlane Center South, which was equipped with internet, computer connection and VHS player.

My objectives were:

  • to enhance the quality of my teaching about authentic assessment by using examples of children's art work, representations of their thinking and behaviors in real life settings
  • to experience another option, Ctools, for creating online and web enhanced courses
  • to learn to use other technology tools including scanner, digital camera and digital video recorder
  • to improve the quality of my lecture overheads
  • to enable students to access and download overheads and on line resources on social emotional development

Summary of Semester Three Project's Accomplishments:

To meet the above objectives I incorporated technology into my courses by:

  • Scanning children's drawings to teach students how to analyze work samples as a form of authentic assessment
  • Using digital photos of children actively engaged in early childhood classrooms to demonstrate how to observe development and learning
  • Digitizing video of children in real life settings in order to teach future teachers how to record their observations of children's behaviors and development.
  • Creating Power Point slides of classroom lectures
  • Making links to readings and important web sites which address policy initiatives, current issues and advocacy resources
  • Using Ctools for the course, Current Issues in Early Education so that students can access online readings and resources as well as submit assignments and receive prompt instructor feedback
