Introduction Overview  Narratives Exhibits Reflection

At first I was concerned about the level of technology that we had at Nowlin.  The time that we had spent in the computer lab when I first arrived showed me that using the Internet in the computer lab would be quite a challenge.  Our computers were very slow when connected to the Internet, and this often resulted in the children waiting too long and not actually accomplishing anything.  However, we did have a wide array of software--which proved to be very useful in completing our MITTEN project.

Luckily for me, I had a great cooperating teacher to work with who proved to be an excellent resource.  Mrs. Garcia had access to three laptops which we could use in the classroom.  They were PCs instead of Macs (like we had in the lab), so we were able to use them when we needed to do lessons using Microsoft software.  Considering that most of our project revolved around making PowerPoint presentations, this proved to be especially useful.  She also helped me find quick solutions to sticky situations.  For example, we were unable to save anything to a disk in the media center (where we did all of our online research).  Instead, we had the children write down or print out the web address and then I would find the pictures for them on my computer and save them to their disks and show them how to download them onto their presentations.

Although the technical part of this project was not very difficult for me, coordinating it into our daily routine definitely was a problem.  I felt as though this project took entirely too long to complete and ended up consuming much of our extra time.  However, even though this became an issue toward the end, some factors came into play that quickly made me realize how valuable this project really was.  It was towards the end of the project that Mrs. Garcia and I noticed that we did not have to offer as much help as we used to.  We also noticed that the children were helping each other instead of asking us questions and had developed their own ways of fixing their fonts, adding backgrounds, etc. that were unknown to us.  As a result, they were not only sharing their newfound knowledge with one another, but we were learning new things as well!  This helped me to realize how important this project was and why I wanted to do it in the first place.

After completion of the project, I am able to look back and see how much our students have learned.  It is amazing to think that the children who used computers primarily for word processing at the beginning of the semester, can now use it for online research, making web diagrams and PowerPoint presentations and can also now successfully use digital video cameras to document their ideas.  I feel very fortunate that I was able to work with such a wonderful cooperating teacher and such a great group of students to complete this project.  I feel as though it was a great learning experience for all of us, as we were able to share our existing knowledge about how to use technology as well as develop new knowledge and share that as well.  I couldn't have asked for a more rewarding experience, and it is my only hope that Mrs. Garcia and her students will continue to integrate technology into their daily activities throughout the remainder of the school year.
