| Overview
The Northville Public Schools Early Childhood Center is a Regio based program, meaning the project approach is used. Teachers observe the children's interests and lessons are flexibly planned around the children, with input from the children. Keeping in mind the use of technology in the classroom,
we began
by using a digital camera to document the children's work. We
photographed
their shape collages, tiling with shapes, use of pattern blocks and
making
shape books. We gradually introduced the class to preschool software .
They were able to draw shapes on the computer as we printed their work.
Finally, we gave them an assignment to work on at home. We asked
parents to help the children explore shapes both inside and outside of
their homes.Using a digital camera, regular camera and/or scanner, the
children photographed a variety shapes in their world and presented
them
to the class at group time. The children were proud of their
work,
and parents reported that their children showed an increase in
recognition
of and awareness of shapes.
