Internet access.
OPENER:
Pass out portfolios with unit assignments
to students and explain that they will be used to evaluate student understanding
at the end of the unit.
PROCEDURE:
1.
Explain each assignment in the portfolio and how each will be graded. The
first assignment is to post a question relating to Lord of the Flies
and a response to another student’s question on the classroom discussion
board. Students will have two weeks to complete their postings for credit.
After that, they may continue to use the board as a place to meet and share
help with homework or explore ideas from class and the text. Students without
Internet access will have the opportunity to post messages at the school
Media Center when the class goes to take an online quiz next week.
2.
Pull up the class discussion board site and show students how to access
it.
3.
Discuss appropriate postings (same as classroom conversation) and give
examples of things to be discussed on the site.
4.
Go the through all assignments in the portfolio and due dates for each.
Remind students that the portfolio contains
all of their homework for this unit. They are responsible for turning in
assignments by the due dates. They must go to the classroom discussion
board at least twice during this unit and post two messages. I will check
the board daily and also on the weekends. If they need to ask a question
about something, they should use the discussion board. I will wait to see
if they get a response from a fellow student, but I will also be available
to answer questions on the discussion board. I will be able to assess student
understanding of class discussions and assignments based on their postings.
In addition, I will evaluate their postings by giving 10 points credit
for the first question they post and another 10 points for the first reply
they post. I will encourage them to continue to use the site after the
first two postings for credit.
