Developing the Image of the Child

Our project focuses on the children building self esteem through different experiences
and activities. As students come in the door to the Kindergarten, they are met with the
Who’s Who Board which has the pictures of all the students, staff, and children on it with
their names in print. This allows for a sense of belonging to the group along with the
building of a community.
The students have also had the opportunity to study themselves in the mirror and draw a
self portrait, paying special attention to details; eye color, skin color, hair color, etc.
These portraits were then scanned unto the computer for future use. Using KidPix, the
children wrote their names using different mediums. Some used text boxes, others used
the paint brush, and still others used the chalk.
The children, through activities, lessons, books, and discussions, have learned how to
speak more openly with each other and the teachers. The children are more willing to
discuss themselves and their feelings. The children had a great time creating pictures of
themselves and other interesting activities that we did.
Our classroom has a real sense of community because of our MITTEN project. How we
talk to each and react to conflicts has evolved over the semester. The children seem
much more confident in themselves and their actions. The students are more in a habit
of sticking up for themselves as well as listening to another child's words when the child
is speaking to them.
