Narratives of Achievement
There are National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) which all teachers of technology strive to accomplish. We achieved the standards listed below:

NATIONAL EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY STANDARDS FOR ALL TEACHERS

I. TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS AND CONCEPTS.

Teachers demonstrate a sound understanding of technology operations and concepts. Teachers:

A. demonstrate introductory knowledge, skills, and understanding of concepts related to technology (as described in the ISTE National Education Technology Standards for Teachers).

  • We demonstrated to our students the Kid Pix program reviewing the meaning of the icons and explaining how we were going to draw our adopted tree on the computers in the lab. We also reviewed how to use the mouse and when and how to print their final picture. Please see Exhibit 2.
  • We  used the digital camera to record the student's results.  We also taught the children how to use the digital camera. Please see Exhibit 2 and Exhibit 5.
  • Learning to use the scanner was also included in these projects. Please see Exhibit 4.
II. PLANNING AND DESIGNING LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS AND EXPERIENCES.

Teachers plan and design effective learning environments and experiences supported by technology. Teachers:

A. design developmentally appropriate learning opportunities that apply technology enhanced instructional strategies to support the diverse needs of learners.

  • Using our first grade science curriculum we planned the technology as a way of enhancing the lessons involving the seasonal changes, as well as the unit on Living and Nonmoving. Please see Exhibit 2.
D. plan for the management of technology resources within the context of learning activities.
  • Children created their tree pictures using their knowledge of the drawing tools as well as their developmental  coordination of the mouse.  The slide show also demonstrates this coordination along with their creativity! Please see Exhibit 2 and Exhibit 3.

III. TEACHING, LEARNING, AND THE CURRICULUM.

Teachers implement curriculum plans, that include methods and strategies for applying technology to maximize student learning. Teachers:

B. use technology to support learner centered strategies that address the diverse needs of students.

  • The children created their own slide shows and then viewed it on their own during centers time.  We will continue this procedure throughout the year reflecting back on the first one created. Please see Exhibit 3.
 C. apply technology to develop students' higher order skills and creativity.
  • The children created their picture for the slide show using their imaginations.  Their pictures and narration's were indicative of their developmental levels. Please see Exhibit 3

IV. ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION

Teachers apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies. Teachers:

A. apply technology in assessing student learning of subject matter using a variety of assessment techniques.

  • We assessed the children's knowledge of computer skills as they used the mouse to develop the tree pictures. We also could evaluate their computer knowledge as they asked appropriate questions using the correct computer terms such as  mouse, computer screen, keyboard, etc. We could also evaluate the children's understanding of keeping to the theme of the slide show by the picture they created. Please see Exhibit 3

V. PRODUCTIVITY AND PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

Teachers use technology to enhance their productivity and professional practice. Teachers:

    A. use technology resources to engage in ongoing professional development and lifelong learning.

    • Through the MiTTEN project  we became aware of several places we could access which would support me with any questions I might have during any given project in the future.  We have also discovered resources in our own school district which would are available to teachers.
    B. continually evaluate and reflect on professional practice to make informed decisions regarding the use of technology in support of student learning.
    • I developed this e-portfolio and kept a journal as to my projects and ideas I want to use in the future.
    • I continually seek out appropriate technology to utilize with the class.
    • I have become more confident in learning about new technology and attempting to integrate it into my lessons.
    D. use technology to communicate and collaborate with peers, parents, and the larger community in order to nurture student learning.
    • Through the MiTTEN project I have acquired names and e-mail addresses of other teachers with whom I can consult with via e-mail regarding resources.

VI. SOCIAL, ETHICAL, LEGAL, AND HUMAN ISSUES.

Teachers understand the social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of technology in PK-12 schools and apply those principles in practice. Teachers:

    E. facilitate equitable access to technology resources for all students.

    • As my students request or are required to learn more about technology, I will be able to assist them in seeking out new information.
