Simple
Machines Unit
As I reflect on this science unit, I feel there are many positive things about it. I think it is definitely worth doing again. There are, however, a few things that I would change to improve the lessons for next time. My students really enjoyed using the technology. The project encouraged and motivated them to learn more. Not only were they learning the science concepts of simple machines, they enhanced their language arts skills and their use of technology skills. They learned how to use Kid Pix, Netscape Composer, digital cameras, scanners and the Internet. When teaching this unit again, I would be probably shorten the requirements a bit. The students were involved in quite a big project. I didn't realize what a huge time committment it was going to be. Creating the slides took a great deal of time. There were some problems with the computers freezing up. The technology coaches think that maybe the students were using too many details in their pictures causing the computers to freeze up. Then the students had to restart the computer, losing their information that was not saved. This part of the project was very frustrating for the students and the teachers. Each activity in this project was great. The integration of technology enhanced the lessons and made learning more fun. It just took so much time to complete! I have students who have not entirely completed the project and continue to work on it. |
