Introduction Overview  Narratives  Exhibits Reflection

Standard I:  Technology Operations and Concepts:
Teachers demonstrate a sound understanding of technology operations and concepts.
Teachers:
  • Demonstrate introductory knowledge, skills, and understanding of concepts related to technology.
  • Demonstrate continual growth in technology knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and emerging technologies.
The MITTEN project helped develop my growth in technology.  As a part of the TTI program, I have been evaluating my technological awareness over the past year.  This project helped me see how to fit technology into my teaching.  I learned about the ease of planning technology into a lesson.  My classroom is now being linked to the Internet.  My lessons will continue to grow in the direction of incorporating more web sites and information to help energize my teaching.  I also learned more about digital cameras, slide shows, Kid Pix, and how to use the smart cart in my building.    My personal goal was to help the students view Science and Math in a different way.  I feel incorporating technology helped develop their understandings as well and my own.  Please refer to the lessons on the Exhibits page.

Standard  II:  Planning and Designing Learning Environments and Experiences:
Teachers plan and design effective learning environments and experiences supported by technology.
Teachers:

  • Design developmentally appropriate learning opportunities that apply technology enhanced instructional strategies to support the diverse needs of learners.
  • Apply current research on teaching and learning with technology when planning learning environments and experiences.
  • Identify and locate technology resources and evaluate them for accuracy and suitability.
  • Plan strategies to manage student learning in a technology enhanced environment.
The technology in our lesson reached all of our students in a variety of ways.  The students began their journey creating a web using their prior knowledge about measurement.  The future lessons were planned around the information from the web.  Our lessons met the students where their learning was.  Many of our students knew about measuring with paper clips or blocks or other non-standard unit, but they were unsure of how to use a ruler or other tools.  This was the basis for our unit.  The students were introduced to a variety of measuring tools: a ruler, measuring tape, a cup, and a scale.  The students then brainstormed how we would use measurement in our school.  This connection to the real world helped the students see the importance of this skill.  A group of students travelled around the school taking pictures with the digital camera of things we could measure (Exhibit #2).  All students were put into a group to take the pictures.  The next step was turning those pictures into a slide show, where students could select the measurement tool we needed to use. They also saw the results of their meassurement adventures in graph form to compare and contrast (Exhibit #4).

Standard III:  Teaching Learning and the Curriculum:
Teachers implement curriculum plans that include methods and strategies for applying technology to maximize student learning.
Teachers:

  • Facilitate technology enhanced experiences that address content standards and student technology standards.
  • Use of technology to support learner-centered strategies that address the diverse needs of students.
  • Apply technology to develop students' higher order skills and creativity.
  • Manage student learning abilities in technology enhanced environment.
The benchmarks for the state of Michigan include many about the concept of measurement.  Students need to be able to read, use, and apply a variety of measuring skills in order to problem solve.  These curriculum standards fit beautifully into our unit.  the technology this unit used helped to supplement the classroom learning that was happening.  The students spent many lessons exploring measurement as well as working on the computers to show their understanding.  The students worked on a class book about measuring items.
They needed to apply their thinking skills to also suggest a proper tool to use to measure.  Please refer to the lessons on the Exhibits page.

Standard IV:  Assessment and Evaluation:
Teachers apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation  strategies.
Teachers:

  • Apply technology in assessing student learning of subject mater using a variety of assessment techniques.
  • Use technology resources to collect and analyse data, interpret results, and communicate findings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning.
  • Apply multiple methods of evaluation to determine students' appropriate use of technology resources for learning, communication, and productivity.

The students involved in these unit were continuously assess throughout the unit with a variety of assessments.  The first involved assessing their prior knowledge and representing that as a web (exhibit #1).  The students also held up pictures of measurement tools during the slide show so the teachers could observe their answers.  The students also created a class book which was posed as an assessment to find something to measure and identify the correct tool to measure  it.  The students also went on-line to take a measurement quiz at www.funbrain.com/measure/index.html

Standard V:  PRoductivity and Professional Practice:
Teachers use technology to enhance their productivity and professional practice.
Teachers:

  • Use technology resources to engage in ongoing professional development and lifelong learning.
  • Continually evaluate and reflect on professional practice to make informed decisions regarding the use of technology in support of student learning.
  • Apply technology to increase productivity to communicate and collaborate with peers, parents, and the larger community in order to nurture student learning.

This project helped to inform parents of the use of technology in or classroom.  We did this by sending home a parent letter.  The students also presented their class made book to parents at our Parent Involvement night.  The book may also be linked to the school web page for parents to view at their own discretion.  All of these steps have helped improve the communication between school and home.  This communication lets parent sin on what is going on doing the school day and what their children are learning.  This is a lifelong goal of all educators- parent involvement.  Technology has helped to strengthen that connection.  The connection of Internet in the classroom will also help to connect the classroom even more.  Both Latrice and I, feel comfortable using technology to help plan lessons, communicate with parents, and  to be more productive educators.

Standard VI: Social, Ethical, Legal, and Human Issues:
Teachers understand the social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use od technology in PK - 12 schools and apply that understanding in practice.
Teachers:

  • Model and teach legal and ethical practice related to technology use.
  • Apply technology resources to enable and empower learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities.
  • Identify and use technology resources that affirm diversity.
  • Promote safe and healthy use of technology resources.
  • Facilitate equitable access to technology resources for all students.
All the technology used in this unit was modelled to the students by the teacher and student teacher.  The students were able to use their own computers and had adults to ask questions and to help them.  The parents were aware of how the technology was used through notes.  The software used fit the diverse needs and levels of our students.  They were able to use the software independently after some modelling.  they were also so excited to use and see the results of their work.  They enjoyed hearing their voices on the story and loved seeing all the different ways to use technology.
