Standard VI:  Social, Ethical, Legal, and Human Issues.

  • Apply technology resources to enable and empower learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities.
Algebra One and Geometry classes are heterogeneously mixed with students of different characteristics, backgrounds, and abilities.  These classes include Special Education students and 504 Plan students.  The students with special needs displayed a higher comfort and interest level with the technology then in the classroom.  The technology put all students on the same level.  For Example:  with the Algbra One Communications goal, I had a students who had a difficult time with writing; by using MS Word he could concentrate on his answers and not be concerned with having difficulty writing them out.  Other students who have a difficult time with the content were able to view material in a different manner to produce a better understanding.

  • Facilitate equitable access to technology resources for all students.
At the start of the project I surveyed the students to find out their technology capabilities at home, and their knowledge of software and hardware.  I did not want to assign a home assignment if a student did not have the access to complete it.

In each case with Algebra One and Geometry, the student were taken to a computer lab were they most often had their own computer to work with, or on the occasion when they had to pair up the students were assigned work so that each person had to work "hands on" with the computer.  Calculus was assigned work at home, but given a week to complete the assignment and the school lab is available before and after school if they could not complete the assignment at home or for make-up work for any of the classes.
